    First record of the Mediterranean asteroid Sclerasterias richardi (Perrier in Milne-Edwards 1882) in the Azores Archipelago (NE Atlantic Ocean)

    The first occurrence of the Mediterranean fissiparous asteroid Sclerasterias richardi (Perrier in Milne-Edwards 1882) is reported from the Azores based upon dredged material off the south coast of São Miguel Island at 135 m depth. This record represents a considerable expansion of the species’ geographic range, otherwise reported with certainty only from the Mediterranean Sea. S. richardi is capable of producing long-lived planktotrophic larvae with high dispersal potential to reach remote areas such as the Azores. Alternatively, this species is also capable of reproducing asexually through fission, which could insure the maintenance of viable numbers in a stranded population. The presence of S. richardi in Azorean waters and its rarity in an otherwise thoroughly investigated area does not necessarily imply a recent arrival nor a human-mediated introduction, as the depths in consideration (80-700 m) are also the least studied in the archipelago.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Tectonic control of the Tejo river fluvial incision during the late Cenozoic, in Ródão – central Portugal (Atlantic Iberian border)

    Staircases of strath terraces and strongly incised valleys are the most typical landscape features of Portuguese rivers. This paper examines the incision achieved during the late Cenozoic in an area crossed by the Tejo river between the border with Spain and the small town of Gavia˜o. In the more upstream reach of this area, the Tejo crosses the Ro´da˜o tectonic depression, where four levels of terraces are distinguished. During the late Cenozoic fluvial incision stage, the Ro´da˜o depression underwent less uplift than the adjacent areas along the river. This is reflected by the greater thicknesses and spatial extent of the terraces; terrace genesis was promoted by impoundment of alluvium behind a quartzitic ridge and the local presence of a soft substratum. Outside this tectonic depression, the Tejo has a narrow valley incised in the Hercynian basement, with some straight reaches that probably correspond to NE–SW and NNW–SSE faults, the terraces being nearly absent. Geomorphological evidence of tectonic displacements affecting the Ro´da˜o dissected terrace remnants is described. Geochronological dating of the two younger and lower terrace levels of this depression suggests a time-averaged incision rate for the Tejo in the Ro´da˜o area, of ca. 1.0 m/ka over the last 60 thousand years. A clear discrepancy exists between this rate and the 0.1 m/ka estimated for the longer period since the end of the Pliocene. Although episodes of valley incision may be conditioned by climate and base-level changes, they may also have been controlled by local factors such as movement of small fault-bounded blocks, lithology and structure. Regional crustal uplift is considered to be the main control of the episodes of valley incision identified for this large, long-lived river. A model is proposed in which successive regional uplift events—tectonic phases—essentially determined the long periods of rapid river downcutting that were punctuated by short periods of lateral erosion and later by some aggradation, producing strath terraces

    On the dynamics of perfect fluids in non-minimally coupled gravity

    In this work we explore the consequences that a non-minimal coupling between geometry and matter can have on the dynamics of perfect fluids. It is argued that the presence of a static, axially symmetric pressureless fluid does not imply a Minkowski space-time like as is in General Relativity. This feature can be atributed to a pressure mimicking mechanism related to the non-minimal coupling. The case of a spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by fluid matter is analyzed, and it is shown that under equilibrium conditions the total fluid mass is about twice that of the black hole. Finally, a generalization of the Newtonian potential for a fluid element is proposed and its implications are briefly discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    A comprehensive review on modular multilevel converters, submodule topologies, and modulation techniques

    The concept of the modular multilevel converter (MLC) has been raising interest in research in order to improve their performance and applicability. The potential of an MLC is enormous, with a great focus on medium- and high-voltage applications, such as solar photovoltaic and wind farms, electrified railway systems, or power distribution systems. This concept makes it possible to overcome the limitation of the semiconductors blocking voltages, presenting advantageous characteristics. However, the complexity of implementation and control presents added challenges. Thus, this paper aims to contribute with a critical and comparative analysis of the state-of-the-art aspects of this concept in order to maximize its potential. In this paper, different power electronics converter topologies that can be integrated into the MLC concept are presented, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each topology. Nevertheless, different modulation techniques used in an MLC are also presented and analyzed. Computational simulations of all the modulation techniques under analysis were developed, based on four cascaded full-bridge topologies. Considering the simulation results, a comparative analysis was possible to make regarding the symmetry of the synthesized waveforms, the harmonic content, and the power distribution in each submodule constituting the MLC.This work has been supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, within the R&D Units Project Scope UIDB/00319/2020.     Balancing the active power of a railway traction power substation with an sp-RPC

    The railway system is one of the safest, most efficient, and environmentally friendly means of land transport for people and goods. However, as the demand for mobility has increased, the current railway system has shown some weaknesses, requiring an increase in catenary power in order to be able to supply power to longer trains and faster locomotives, as well as to increase rail traffic. This paper proposes a control algorithm to be implemented in a sectioning post-Rail Power Conditioner (sp-RPC). The sp-RPC is connected to the neutral section between two traction power substations (TPS). With the control algorithm, it is possible to minimize the existing unbalance of the active powers of each TPS. In a regenerative braking condition, this surplus energy can be used to assist the traction of another locomotive on the existing overhead line. In this way, it is possible to increase the capacity of the overhead line. The analysis was performed with computer models using a modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology for the sp-RPC.     Patterns of Diversity of the Rissoidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Region

    The geographical distribution of the Rissoidae in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea was compiled and is up-to-date until July 2011. All species were classified according to their mode of larval development (planktotrophic and nonplanktotrophic), and bathymetrical zonation (shallow species—those living between the intertidal and 50 m depth, and deep species—those usually living below 50 m depth). 542 species of Rissoidae are presently reported to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, belonging to 33 genera. The Mediterranean Sea is the most diverse site, followed by Canary Islands, Caribbean, Portugal, and Cape Verde. The Mediterranean and Cape Verde Islands are the sites with higher numbers of endemic species, with predominance of Alvania spp. in the first site, and of Alvania and Schwartziella at Cape Verde. In spite of the large number of rissoids at Madeira archipelago, a large number of species are shared with Canaries, Selvagens, and the Azores, thus only about 8% are endemic to the Madeira archipelago. Most of the 542-rissoid species that live in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean are shallow species (323), 110 are considered as deep species, and 23 species are reported in both shallow and deep waters. There is a predominance of nonplanktotrophs in islands, seamounts, and at high and medium latitudes. This pattern is particularly evident in the genera Crisilla, Manzonia, Onoba, Porosalvania, Schwartziella, and Setia. Planktotrophic species are more abundant in the eastern Atlantic and in the Mediterranean Sea. The results of the analysis of the probable directions of faunal flows support the patterns found by both the Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity and the geographical distribution. Four main source areas for rissoids emerge: Mediterranean, Caribbean, Canaries/Madeira archipelagos, and the Cape Verde archipelago. We must stress the high percentage of endemics that occurs in the isolated islands of Saint Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Cape Verde archipelago and also the Azores, thus reinforcing the legislative protective actions that the local governments have implemented in these islands during the recent years

    Dating the Tejo river lower terraces in the RĂłdĂŁo area (Portugal) to assess the role of tectonics and uplift

    The Tejo river is one of the major drainages in Iberian Peninsula; it is a long-lived system (ca. 3.4 Ma) and provides an archive of long-term landscape development and environmental change controlled by tectonics, climate and eustasy. The most upstream Portuguese reach of the Tejo river, ~ 200 km from the Atlantic coast, shows evidence for five fluvial terraces (T1 to T5) with elevations reaching more than 120 m above the modern river bed. A chronological framework for these terraces is established here by integrating geomorphological, stratigraphical and archaeological information with ages from luminescence dating. Optically stimulated luminescence dating of K-feldspar, (involving the correction for anomalous fading of the luminescence signal), indicates that the younger terraces have a probable age range of: T5 -- 31 to 40 ka; and T4 -- 100 to ~ 280 ka. We deduce that the related major fluvial changes are likely to have been as follows: ~ 10 m of aggradation from ~ 280 to 100 ka (0.06 m/ka); 14 m of incision from 100 to 40 ka (0.23 m/ka); 8 m of aggradation from 40 to 31 ka (0.89 m/ka); 16 m of incision during the last 31 ka (0.52 m/ka). These values indicate that the duration and rate of both aggradation and river downcutting episodes were variable. There is widespread evidence for neotectonic activity in this intraplate region. Neither eustatic nor climatic changes during the Quaternary provide clear trends that might explain the observed pattern of valley incision, thus we conclude that this tectonic activity is the most likely driving mechanism. In the study area, the probable age of the Tejo river sediments deposited before the beginning of valley incision allows the calculation of a time-averaged incision rate of ~ 0.07 to 0.10 m/ka over the last ~ 2.6 Ma. This long-term incision was probably determined by an increase in the relative uplift rate, resulting from the intensification of intraplate compressive stress. During the late Cenozoic fluvial incision stage, the Ródão depression underwent less uplift than the adjacent areas along the river, in which the Tejo has incised a narrow valley into basement rock, with almost no terrace development. Terrace formation was also promoted by soft bedrock (Tertiary arkoses) and by impoundment of alluvium behind resistant barriers crossed by the river. Els continguts químics estan contextualitzats en situacions reals que promouen les habilitats de resolució de problemes i el treball de laboratori.In this paper we present and discuss the guidelines followed in the drawing up of the general secondary school curriculum for Sciences and Technology area in East Timor (10th, 11th and 12th grades). In particular we explain how they were concretized in the chemistry programs, student textbooks and teacher guides, which were conceived under the idea of education for sustainability combined with the Millennium Development Objectives. The chemistry contents are contextualized in real life situations in order to promote problem solving and laboratory work skills
